A guru’s musings

I was with a customer recently - an architectural firm who design buildings with very complex forms. In conversation they commented that having used CATIA for nearly 10 years now, it has meant that they now can further extend the complexity of the forms that they create.  “We’re designing shapes we would never have considered 10 years ago” was the comment they made.

This led me to think about creative designers and tools they use to express themselves. When our company entered this market with CATIA, generally architects at that time had their building forms constrained by both the software tool they used, which then constrained the ability to communicate their thoughts to their supply chain – structural engineers, building services, engineers and contractors.

This was no different than what happened in the other industries some decades ago. Afterall, with an automotive designer sitting at 2D drawing board, how could he express the form of say an Aston Martin as below? :

It’s more likely that it’s simpler to design something like this:

Look around a car – the interior trim, headlamps, rear lamps, steering wheels –all the elements of a car now have complex form in their design language. So it’s inevitable that as technology provides a medium to express creative intent, so we will find that creative designers take this technology and push it to the limit in terms of expression.
It leads to an exciting future for us all.
